Haughton, LA-Following a very brief illness, L.G. "Lon" Gothrup went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 6, 2011. He was born to John and Amanda Gothrup on June 16, 1938 in Alba, Michigan.

Lon faithfully served Jesus Christ as a deacon of First Baptist Church of Haughton, LA. He was a man of conviction and strong character. He put Philippians 2:3, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves", into action. Honoring God, serving his country, and loving his family were his priorities. His wife, sons, daughter-in-laws, and grandchildren were the love of his life. His encouraging words and strong hugs will be deeply missed.

He served in the United States Air Force as an aircraft engineer mechanic, missile technician, and nuclear safety technician. Lon received the Air Force Commendation Medal, Master Missileman Badge, and Viet-Nam Service Medal, as well as, other honors. After retiring with twenty years of service, he completed studies at Shreveport Vocational-Tech School and started his construction company, Gothrup and Sons. Lon was a person with the ability to perform any type of service needed and always assisted the elderly and widowed of Haughton. He was one of a kind! The town of Haughton recognized this by awarding him the Mike McDuff Community Service Award for outstanding service in 2009.

Lon is survived by his loving wife of fifty-one years, Mary "Nita" Gothrup, and his sons Lonnie Gothrup and wife Tammy of Sulphur, LA and Terry Gothrup and wife Dayle of Bella Vista, AR. He is also survived by his grandchildren Lydia, Timothy, and Nicolas Gothrup; special friends Frank and Shirley Kreid; brothers, Clifford Gothrup and Dennis Gothrup; and sisters, Evelyn Crogar, Darlene Ingles, Louella Meadows, Nita Newkirk, Peggy Smith, and Mary Alexander. He is also survived by his sister-in-laws, Judy Banks Daughtry and husband Vann, Jane Banks, and Eunice Banks, and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother John Gothrup, Jr., and sisters, Toni Conway, Mickie Christsen, and Arletta Christsen.

Pallbearers will be Mike Staton, Jerry McCarty, Jeff Kreid, Royce Green, Randy Harner, and Jody Staton. Honorary pall bearers are the Men's #3 Sunday School Class, deacons of First Baptist Haughton, and McDonald's Morning Group.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at Hill Crest Funeral Home from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at First Baptist Haughton in the sanctuary at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow with full military honors at Hill Crest Memorial Park.

The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation for the loving care the doctors, nurses, and staff of Christus Schumpert Highland Hospital showed to Lon during his illness.
