Funeral services for Betty Brooks Levie, age 81 of Ashland, will be held on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at 3:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church of Ashland with Reverend Malinda Jowers Weaver and Reverend Stephen Hart officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashland City Cemetery.

Mrs. Levie passed away on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham.

She was a Eustis, Florida native, but moved to Clay County at the age of 5 where she lived for the rest of her life. Mrs. Levie was an educator in the Clay County school system for over 40 years; to her, teaching was pure joy and she truly enjoyed working with her students. Mrs. Levie received her bachelors degree in biology and her masters degree in elementary education from Jacksonville State University and was certified as a reading specialist by Auburn University. During her educational career, she taught grades 1-12 throughout the Clay County School system and also taught at Southern Union State Junior College and Jacksonville State University. Mrs. Levie also served as vice-principal at Ashland Elementary School and principal at Ashland Middle School. As a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ashland, she was a long-time Sunday School teacher and especially enjoying singing in the choir. Actually, Mrs. Betty enjoyed singing anywhere and everywhere. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Mrs. Levie is survived by her husband of 63 years, Paul G. Levie; two daughters: Jeannie Elizabeth Walters (David) of Jacksonville and Rebecca Levie Jones (Steve) of Hoover; 3 grandchildren: Elizabeth Brooke Jones Baker (Brian), Molly Kathryn Jones and Hannah Lauren Jones, and 1 great-grandchild, Allie Rebecca Baker, all of Hoover.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Silas Whitson Brooks and Nona Elizabeth Jackson Brooks; two infant daughters; one sister, Louise Brooks Nolen and one brother, Thomas W. Brooks.

Pallbearers will be Andrew Bynum, Tommy Price, Wayne Hocutt, Charles Nolen Jr., Steven Nolen, Phil Anderson, Thomas Brooks Jr. and Jim Levie. Honorary pallbearers will be the First United Methodist Church choir members, current and retired teachers of the Clay County school system, and her former college roommates.

The family will receive friends at The First United Methodist Church of Ashland on Sunday, November 4, 2012 from1:30 P.M. until service time at 3:00 P.M.

Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of the arrangements.
