Martin Luther Valentine was born May 12, 1890, in Emmitsburg, Frederick County, Maryland, the son of Martin Eli Clutz Valentine and Mary Rosetta Elizabeth Ohler. On September 21, 1915, in Harney, Carroll County, Maryland, he married Elsie B. Shoemaker, daughter of Robert Grier Shoemaker and Sarah Ann E. Hill. They were the parents of one daughter: Marion Elizabeth Valentine. Martin passed away in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, on January 17, 1987, and was buried in Piney Creek Reformed Cemetery, Taneytown, Carroll County, Maryland.

Wedding announcement for Martin Luther Valentine and Elsie B. Shoemaker from the Gettysburg Star & Sentinel of Wednesday, September 22, 1915 as well as Saturday, September 25, 1915:

"VALENTINE--SHOEMAKER. Miss Elsie Shoemaker and Luther Valentine were married by the Rev. Seth Russel Downie, Taneytown, at the home of the bride in Harney yesterday afternoon. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grier Shoemaker and Mr. Valentine is a son of Mr. and Mrs.Martin Valentine. He attended Gettysburg College here and was graduated several years ago. He is now in the employ of the Du Pont Powder Company."

From the WW1 Draft Registration Card, June 5, 1917: Martin L. Valentine, 27, of 2602 Van Buren Street, Wilmington, Delaware, was born May 12, 1890 in Emmitsburg, Frederick County, Maryland. He was employed as a Ballistic Engineer, Supt. of Camron Powder Proving Grounds at the E. I. DuPont de Nemours? & Company, at Carney's Point, New Jersey. He was short in height and medium in build, with blue eyes and light hair.

From the Frederick News-Post of June 3, 1935:

"Mr. and Mrs. Luther Valentine and daughter, Betty, Wilmington, Delaware, spent the weekend with the former's mother, Mrs. Rosa Valentine, and also visited with Mr. and Mrs. Claude Conover."

From Monocacy & Catoctin II:

"Luther Valentine was a Gettysburg College alumnus and DuPont explosives chemist of Wilmington, Delaware. He died at the age of 96 in 1987."
