Born in Brunswick, Germany, Oscar Roelecke had medical training. He left Germany to escape the Franco-Prussian War and settled for several years in Washington DC until his marriage in 1873. Then he moved to Baltimore where he was active for the remaining quarter of the century as a painter of still lifes of vegetables and lobsters---"densely packed, sharply drawn, and brilliantly illuminated." (332)

His still-life painting was described as being as unusual as the artist who apparently was an inventor of such diverse items as a "fountain pen, peanut butter, and his own all-metal false teeth." (332)
