In 1860, he was a farmer living with his family in Letterkenny Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had dark hair and light eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg February 28, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 1 as an unassigned private with the 103rd Pennsylvania Infantry (reported with Co. A), and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.

He married Sarah Grace Neff in 1869 and fathered John (b. 07/02/69), Sophia C. (b. @1870), David (b. @1874), Franklin B. (b. 03/03/76), Charles H. (b. 09/24/78), Harry Garfield (b. 09/27/80), Clara M. (b. 08/18/82 - married Daniel Rosenberry), Anna Grace (b. 09/19/84 - married John C. Singer), Grant General (b. 10/??/87), Harrison (b. 10/18/89), William (b. 03/26/92), and infant son (b. 05/04/94, d. 05/08/94). He died in Horse Valley, Franklin County, from "apoplexy."
