Margaret A. Zaruba, 93, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at the Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral service will be Monday, November 5, 11:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, with Rev. Vern Olson officiating. Interment with military honors will be in the Sunset Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3:00 – 6:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Monday from 10:00 - 11:00 A.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 10:45 A.M. Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids or the Sunset Cemetery.

Margaret A. Zaruba was born on the family farm near Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, on June 20, 1919 to Gilbert and Emmaline (Peterson) Cox. Margaret attended District 15 grade school and graduated from Cedar Rapids High School in 1937. She then attended Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Missouri. She returned to Cedar Rapids and began working at the bank. On September 1, 1943, Margaret entered the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. She served in the South Pacific and attained the rank of Master Sergeant. She was honorably discharged on September 22, 1945. On April 7, 1947, Margaret was united in marriage to Thomas Zaruba in St. Edward, Nebraska. They moved to Fullerton for a short time and then to Cedar Rapids and in 1952, moved to a farm near Cedar Rapids. They farmed their entire lives where Margaret helped on the farm and raised their three sons. Margaret moved to Columbus in 2005. She served on committees at church, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and served on the school board and was president of the bank from 1969 to 1983. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, playing computer games, and emailing her family and friends.
