Marcus Lafayette Thompson was born 2 Oct 1880 in Moorefield, Nicholas County, Kentucky and died 5 July 1971 in Bradenton, Florida. He married Anna Marie Radtke on 8 July 1907 in Waukegan, IL. She is the daughter of August Radtke and Emilie Loschmann. After her death, he married Frances Mildred Gurney March 4, 1920 in Almont, MI.

Between 1905- 1908, he was in the Philippine Islands for 3 years during the Philippine Insurrection. He was discharged with a Quartermaster Sargeant rank.

His birth name is Marquis de Lafayette Thompson but he generally used Lafayette for his given name. He was called Tom by his wife Frances and his coworkers at the Pere Marquette Railroad. Lafayette was a fireman and an engineer for the railroad from 1909 to 1945
