Robert Warren Broadwell, 79, (obit): Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Delaware County Daily Times (Primos - Upper Darby, PA) - Saturday, November 24, 2007
Deceased Name: Robert Warren Broadwell, 79, (obit)
Conrail retiree; Army vet; musician Robert Warren Broadwell, 79, of Glenolden, died Nov. 19, after an extended illness. Born June 19, 1928 in West Philadelphia, he was a lifelong native of the Philadelphia area, having graduated from Bartram High School. Mr. Broadwell worked for several years before enlisting in the Army in 1951, serving for two years in Germany and Switzerland. He was promoted to corporal and honorably discharged in 1952, claiming that military service was a highlight of his life and recommended it for all young people. After returning to Philadelphia, he began his professional career at Westinghouse, where he met his future wife of 47 years, Frances Albertini of Chester. The couple wed in 1960. Mr. Broadwell later worked for Conrail for 37 years until his retirement in 1991. A fixture on the area music scene, Mr. Broadwell was best known for his skill as a saxophone virtuoso, playing in a variety of local bands including The Ambassadors and Don Mayo Band for more than six decades. He took up the flute in his 40s to broaden his knowledge and musical range. Mr. Broadwell expressed his philosophy through his music, saying often "I just want to play," a summation of his joyous, humble and occasionally wisecracking approach to all of life. Both of his daughters became musicians as well, following in their father's footsteps. Though less widely known, Mr. Broadwell was a master model builder beginning at age eight, turning out literally hundreds of models from his home workshop. World War II classic aircraft were a favorite subject, reflecting the same joy in growing his skill and perfecting technique that was evident in his endless hours of music practice. He loved the process of building models more than the result, often giving away or even throwing away dozens of examples as soon as he needed more display space. Survivors: Wife of 47 years, Frances Albertini Broadwell; daughters, Jeanne Marie Broadwell of Malvern, Catherine Rose Broadwell of Alexandria, Va. Service: 2-6 p.m. today, Herbert W. Best VFW Post No. 928, MacDade Boulevard and Sutton Avenue, Folsom, Ridley Township. Contributions: Curtis Institute of Music, 1726 Locust St., Philadelphia, PA 19103. Arrangements: Delaware Valley Cremation Center, Philadelphia.
