My expereince - Old (1841-1886) marble gravestones - 4 weathers to a 1

On the old (1841-1886) marble gravestones, the number 4 weathers to a "1" (one) over time. Below are some old marble gravestones which illustrate this. Some of them show unweathered 4s. Some show highly weathered 4s which have weathered to a number one.The reason this happens is because the left portion of the 4 is inscribed very lightly. It doesn't take much weathering to remove it, transforming the 4 to a number 1. A very good example of what the original 4s lookeed like is the gravestone of Frances Bovard (1746 - 1841). An interesting fact is that this often happens on old, marble gravestones where the remainder of the inscription is still very easy to read.
