♥♥Crash/1942
A Virtual Cemetery created by: GordonClan
Description: Long Beach, Calif. January 20 1942. The ferry Command of the Air Corps lost some of its finest pilots with the deaths of 15 officers and men in a TWA transport crash near Las Vegas, Nev., Friday night. "They might have been the honor roll of the command," a high officer said today. They were doing a hell of a fine job."The officer consented to be quoted after a reporter pointed out that Carole Lombard, another victim of the crash, had been given the headline play although the ferry pilots undoubtedly were heroes. The command previously had limited information regarding its fliers to their names and home addresses. "Our men were just doing their duty—a routine job—that's the way we wanted it," explained the officer who asked that his name be withheld. "All these men were topnotchers. Their deaths are a big loss, felt by all of us. They were some of our oldest crews. "The officer said the men had ferried planes to Britain, to Canada, to the east coast of the United States ever since serving was started, July 1. "They were eager to go anywhere, any time—the cream of the crop. "He said the names of the pilots were withheld a short time the night of the crash "until we checked and double checked our records." He explained how even then one error crept into the list. It's a story of why First Lieut. Burton K. Voorhees is alive to ferry more planes and Second Lieut. Frederick J. Dittman of Oakland, Calif. is not. Awaiting arrival of transports Lieut. Dittman remarked, "I've never been on a stratoliner, I'd like to see how it goes." "Take my seat," Lieut. Voorhees offered, "I've ridden them." Dittman did—and died. Lieut. Voorhees' name remained on the TWA passenger list. He came in on Dittman's seat in another plane telephoned headquarters and enabled officials to correct the list almost before it was circulated.
