Veterans - Civil War

No part of the North, including Union Township, was exempt from the effects of the Civil War. Three of these, Benjamin Griffith, George A. Kendall and Job Ledbetter, gave their lives in the war. Organized in April 1887, the George A. Kendall Post No. 499 of the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) located at New Elizabeth/Lizton was named in honor of George Kendall. Many of the Union Township Civil War veterans later joined this post. Minutes of Post meetings from 1887 to 1895 are available online. The June 28, 1917 issue of the Republican reported "Proof of the relentless march of Time was shown, Saturday, when members of the Lizton Post G. A. R. were taken into membership of the Jesse S. Ogden Post (at Danville). One by one, the members of the once flourishing post at Lizton have fallen until there remain only six." Lizton also had a Camp of the Sons of Veterans. The Jan. 14, 1892 issue of the Republican reported "Lizton: The muster of John V. Hadley Camp, Sons of Veterans No. 317 was completed on Saturday evening last by H. C. Weaver and staff, of Col. H. D. Streight Camp No. 87, Pittsboro." At least one Confederate veteran, Simon Weddle, is also buried in Union Township. Another Confederate veteran, Joseph G. Scott, lived in Union Township but is buried in Virginia.
