14TH ALABAMA INFANTRY

The 14th Alabama Infantry was organized at Auburn on Aug 1,1861 with men from Montgomery and Auburn and the counties of Chambers, Jackson, Randolph and Tallapoosa. It first went to Huntsville and stayed until October, then to Fredericksburg, Virginia where it arrived in November. It was sent to Richmond after suffering from camp diseases, especially Measles. It fought at Williamsburg with heavy losses. In April 1862 it numbered 700 effectives. It suffered but a few casualties at Seven Pines. It fought at Mechanicsville and was almost annihilated at Fraziers's Farm and Malvern Hill, losing nearly all the officers, after charging the enemy's position repeatedly(335 casualties). It was engaged at 2nd Manassas with 47 casualties. Greatly reduced in strength, the 14th fought at Sharpsburg with severe losses. The regiment was engaged,with heavy loss(151 casualties)at Salem Church and Chancellorsville. Of the 316 men engaged at Gettysburg, 15% were casualties. The 14th was engaged at both the Wilderness and Spotsylvania. It surrendered at Appomattox with 11 officers and 180 men present. The original muster contained 1317 names.
