Anastasia WitbolsFeugen wanted to see the world. She wanted to be a writer. At 18, she had all the world in front of her. She had just graduated high school (Lincoln College Preparatory Academy in Kansas City, MO) and had started college at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
She studied and enjoyed Latin in high school and once announced -- not entirely in jest -- that were she to ever be named queen of any country (she was really hoping for the Netherlands), she would declare Latin the official language.
She acquired a love for British humor, and had become a fan of the literary works of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. She enjoyed the bands of her own age group, but maintained a great love for both the Beatles and the Cure as well. Test scores in school all through her academic career indicated that she possessed a high intelligence. With high school done, she was looking forward to college, looking forward to life.
Then, at the age of 18 years and 100 days, Anastasia was murdered, all that potential wasted, all that life and joy stolen.
It hurts terribly to lose someone at a young age. It hurts to lose someone suddenly and tragically. It is obscenely more painful when they are taken in such a senseless manner.
Her death was the result of a "thrill kill"; the killer, an acquaintance and one-time friend of hers with whom she did not get along, wanted to know the feeling of having killed someone, and found her a convenient target. She was shot to death in front of her then-boyfriend, Justin Bruton, who himself died two days later, an apparent suicide.
At one time, Anastasia had considered moving in with Justin, and sharing his apartment with two other friends. Tragically, one of those other friends died violently some years later. Anastasia, Justin, and their friend Anna Hunsicker are all gone now. The fourth person in that would-be foursome was Anastasia's killer.
Anastasia's killer was eventually arrested, charged, tried, and convicted of Murder in the First Degree, and now serves a life sentence without any chance of parole, but that fact does not bring her back, nor bring closure to those of us who loved her. After all this time, she is missed still and forever by her friends and family.

She was survived by her parents, three sisters, two step-parents, three step-siblings, one half-sibling, a step-nephew, and many friends. She was cremated and some of her ashes buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery, the remainder scattered in many locations, including Europe.
