Charles married Shirley Huggins in June of 1942 and they raised a family of five children. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1940 to 1945. In 1944 he was awarded the Navy Good Conduct Medal. He mustered out in 1945 as Petty Officer Third Class after being injured aboard ship. He was an electrician and a telephone switch repairman for over thirty years, retiring from Sprint/Centel in 1978. In his later years , Charles devoted all his time and energy to being a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His favorite pastime was being the very best Papa to his three great-grandchildren who lived with him.
