She was the youngest of four children. Though she was born in California, she spent a majority of her life in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Merla died the morning of October 30, 1953, from heart problems she had had since she was a child. She was twenty-three years old.
She was survived by a young son, her mother, siblings, and a grandmother.
