Singer, Songwriter. American folk rock singer-songwriter from Lakeland, Minnesota; member of the band A Firm Handshake. At age 14, Sobiech was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and began to write music after his diagnosis. CBS Minnesota reported that during his treatment he underwent 10 surgeries and 20 rounds of chemotherapy. He was known to bring his guitar to treatment sessions as it made the long days easier. In May 2012, he learned he had up to one year to live and as a farewell to his family, recorded the song “Clouds”, which he released as a YouTube video in December 2012. His video went viral and at the time of his death had surpassed more than three million views. It currently has over 13 million views with more each day. After receiving significant media attention, prior to his death “Clouds” charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a hit in Canada, France and the United Kingdom. Numerous artists began to release tribute versions of “Clouds” with the most notable version being produced and directed by Rainn Wilson and Justin Baldoni, and released on Wilson’s YouTube channel, SoulPancake. This version featured numerous celebrities including Wilson and Baldoni, as well as members of Sobiech’s family, lip syncing to the song. Sobiech also formed the band A Firm Handshake with friends Samantha "Sammy" Brown and Reed Redmond. A Firm Handshake released their first album in early 2013, which charted in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. On Sobiech’s 18th birthday, a documentary about his battle with osteosarcoma entitled “My Last Days: Meet Zach Sobiech” was published by Baldoni and released on Wilson’s SoulPancake channel. The 22-minute episode has been watched more than 12 million times. A second documentary entitled “My Last Days / Zach Sobiech, One Year Later” was released on SoulPancake in May 2014. Several months earlier, on December 5, 2013, Twin Cities radio station KS95 collaborated with the Children’s Cancer Research Fund and Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare to organize a tribute at the Mall of America, during which over 5,000 people sang his hit song "Clouds". Sobiech was also named among CNN’s Extraordinary People of 2013. Sobiech’s mother, wanting to share the story of how her son’s struggle with cancer touched millions of people, wrote a memoir about his life entitled “Fly a Little Higher: How God Answered a Mom’s Small Prayer in a Big Way”. His family established The Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund at Children's Cancer Research Fund, which by late 2015 had raised over one million dollars in donations. In early 2016, Warner Brothers agreed to make a movie called “Clouds”, based on his life, which will be directed and produced by Baldoni who documented Sobiech’s story while he was alive. Sobiech died a few weeks after his 18th birthday at his home in Lakeland, due to complications from osteosarcoma. On the day of his funeral, “Clouds” hit number one on ITunes. (bio by: Christina)
