Archie was a son of Abraham Hanes and his wife Margaret Boren. He married Elizabeth Titus on November 5, 1854 in Scioto County, Ohio. They had twelve children. Archie served in the Civil War. He was a private in Company H, 56th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Archie enlisted on October 26, 1861 and was discharged on August 27, 1864; but wasn't mustered out until November 15, 1864 at New Orleans, Louisiana.
