Howard Anderson Springen was born in Northwood, North Dakota on September 2, 1912 and died October 18, 2006, at Presbyterian Village North in Dallas.
As a child Howard worked on farms. He went to school at Mayville, North Dakota, playing clarinet in the band, developing a life-long appreciation of music. He lived in Minnesota for over 30 years, where he became a licensed aircraft mechanic and supervisor working for Northwest, Mid-Continental and Braniff Airlines. He was involved in the WWII war effort of modifying B24 aircraft. In 1962, Braniff Airlines transferred Howard to Dallas. He and his wife, Trudy, became charter members of King of Glory Lutheran Church, and active participants in the congregation and its ministries. Howard was especially active in the Sanctuary Choir (he was "Choir Angel") in which he sang well in his eighties. One of his passionate commitments was building wheel chair ramps for the disabled which he continued until he was 92. As a youth he was a ski jumper, and skiing was a favorite activity for him into his seventies. At the age of 88, he married May Preston and proceeded to tour the world with trips to Norway, Panama Canal, Alaska, Italy and various U.S. trips. He was very active to the very last day of his life - a fan of Dallas Opera and Dallas Symphony, and senior "Man of the Year" at Cooper Aerobics in the year 2000.
Howard died "with his boots on" just like his Aunt Sophia who raised him. Howard died in peace as a man of faith, knowing that "if we live, we live to the Lord; if we die, we die to the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord" (Romans 14:8).
He was preceded in death by his mother Hilda Anderson Springen, father Hans Springen, his Aunt Sophia who raised him, his brother Kenneth Springen and Sister Carolyn Hedrick, and his first wife, Gertrude (Trudy) Springen. He was survived by his wife, May; a daughter; granddaughter and great-grandson; and a son.
