His career included being the publisher and founder of Prometheus Books (and its imprints: Pyr, Seventh Street Books, Humanity Books, and Gateway Books); the publisher of the "Free Inquiry" and "Skeptical Inquirer" magazines; and as the founder and past chairman of the Center for Inquiry. He was professor Emeritus of philosophy at the University of Buffalo. The asteroid (6629) Kurtz was named in his honor.
