Professional Cyclist. He was one of the all time greats of Italian cycling, the "third man" of the golden age of the sport in Italy at the turn of the Second World War, after Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali, that between 1941 and 1956 achieved 47 victories. He also was three consecutive years winner of the Tour of Flanders, Belgium, in 1949, 1950 and 1951, so he was nicknamed "The lion of Flanders". He was also a three-time winner of the "Giro d'Italia" in 1948, 1951 and 1955. In 1952 he was about to win the world championship, but technical problems relegated him to fourth. He died at Vaiano, his birthplace.
