James was 34 years old and Mary was 16. She had emigrated from Ireland with her parents in 1866. About 1885 James, Mary Ellen and their four daughters: Bridget, Jane, Catherine and Margaret - came west to Maurice, Iowa with a team and wagon and a cow, looked for land, and bought a quarter section two miles west and four miles north of Rock Valley, Iowa where they farmed until moving to Madison, South Dakota in 1910.
