Jan Zmitrowicz left Russia to immigrate to the US from Russia. The SS Brandenburg departed Bremen Germany on 26 Dec 1908 and arrived in New York on January 9th. According to the ship manifest Jan was 5' 8" and had blonde hair & blue eyes and was a farm laborer. His wife Maria is listed as being in Gorni, Wilno, Russia. His descent was listed as Lithuanian with his final destination as joining Ivan Kahanowsky in Wharton, New Jersey. Eight months later his wife Maria and brother Pawel (Paul) join him in Wharton.

There are many different spellings for his last name. The ship manifest - Zmitrowicz, death certificate - Zmitrovic, and city directories once married to Selma are Mitrovich.

In 1913 his brother Pawel's wife Paulina and daughter join him in Youngstown. The earliest record we can find of Jan being in Youngstown is for the birth of his daughter in 1915. Sometime after 1909 and before 1914 - his wife Maria disappears as he is married to Salonicja "Selma" Schueljko (Szulejko)(Seely) who is the mother of his children
Mary Mitrovich (1915–1972), Mike John Mitrovich (1916–1977) and Kostek.

Jan/John dies shortly before his infant son and his widow remarries Stephen Yurchek.
