Amos Ashley, 53, Apparent Suicide
Wife Hears Shot; Finds Husband In Basement


Sibley-Amos W. Ashley, 53, who resides two miles west and two miles north of Garber, was found dead at 10:30 a. m. Sunday at the foot of the stairs in his basement.

Mr. Ashley had received mental treatment several times in recent years and was ill at the time. His wife heard the blast of the 4:10 shotgun and was the first to reach him. He was dead instantly from the close-range shot against his temple.

The coroner’s jury found that Amos W. Ashley of near Sibley came to his death by his own hands and stated that Mr. Ashleywas temporarily insane at the time he committed the act. This was found Monday night at Lamb Funeral Home by the jury composed of J. T. Swanson, foreman; Joe Baecher, Ray Ramneberger, Earl Johason, Orville Gray and W. C. Preston.

The jury's entire verdict is as follows: "In the matter of the inquisition on the body of Amos W. Ashley deceased, held at Gibson City, Ill., on the first day of May, we .the undersigned jurors, sworn to inquire of the death of Amos Ashley on oath do find that he came to his death of gun shot wound, self inflicted in his home about nine miles northwest of Gibson City on April 30, 1950 about 9:30 a. in. "We the jury do honestly believe that Mr. Autos W. Ashley at the time was temporarily insane when he committed this act.”

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Lamb funeral home. Rev. R. M. Luedde officiated

He was born June 13, 1896. son of Ellis and Minnie Ashley. He married Miss Laura Stein on Nov. 14. 1914, in Gibson City. He had lived his entire life On a farm south of here.

She survives with two sons. Ellis, at home; Curtis, Sibley; one daughter. Miss Dorothy W. Ashley. Rantoul; one sister. Mrs. Elizabeth Nicewander, Garber; one grandson.

Three brothers, Harley, Joe and Loren, preceded him in death.

Eldest of five children of Ellas and Wilhelmena (Minnie) Shaefer Ashley, he married Laura Lena Stein of Sibley, IL on Nov. 14, 1914. They had three children.

His parents and two children, Ellis Densmore (July 4, 1915- Dec. 6,1966) and Dorothy Wilhelmina Pranger (Feb. 25, 1919 - April 15, 1959) died before him..
