Funeral services for Ray Ugolini, 92, of Greenville, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Boone Funeral Home, Greenville. He died Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at his home. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Greenville, under the direction of Boone Funeral Home.
Mr. Ugolini was born in Greenville and attended St. Rose of Lima Academy and Starling and Central Public Schools. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII and served in the South Pacific Theatre where he received the Bronze Star.
After his discharge in 1945, he was employed on an oil-drilling rig, as a dairyman and as a painting contractor for 25 years. He was also in construction of radio towers. Mr. Ugolini was a communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion, the VFW and the AARP. He was also an avid fisherman.
Mr. Ugolini was preceded in death by his wife, Mertice Slayton Ugolini; three sisters; two brothers; and one grandson.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann (David) Wright, of Edwards; three sons, Gerald Ugolini, of Greenville, Harold(Mimi) Ugolini, of West Virginia, and Frank Ugolini, of Birmingham, Ala.; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1- 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

When Ray was 6 his mother died after childbirth. He remained with his father until his death from cancer in 1933. At age 13, Ray went to live with his older brother Geno. Being a "jack of all trades" he continued his studies and worked odd jobs until enlisting in the US Army at Camp Shelby, Ms in 1941.
Ray served as an infantryman in the Pacific Theater during WWII, obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant(E-6) while serving with the 182nd Infantry Regiment, Americal Division. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to Greenville.
Ray worked in a variety of jobs during his life. One of those jobs was working on radio and television towers across the south and the mid-west with his brother-in-law, Hoyt Vaughn and his oldest brother, Geno.
In May 1947, Ray married Mertice Slayton in Greenville. Together they raised 4 children, a daughter and 3 sons and remained together for over 60 years. In 1985, Ray retired to his gardens, hunting with his son-in-law and fishing the local lakes of Ferguson, Washington, Lee and Chicot. Ray was a devout Roman Catholic and life long member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Greenville.
Ray is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mert, his parents, all of his siblings, Geno, Julia, Eunice, Frank, Anna, and Vito, and one grandson Brandon Wright.
