Polio Hits Parents of New Baby: Most healthy new babies are taken home after a week or 10 days, but little Charles Robert Atkins at 18 days is still a nursery resident at the Community Hospital, Geneva. Reason: His parents Edith, 23, and David, 25, of Wheaton, are both polio patients at the hospital. Mrs. Atkins was stricken 10 days before Charles was born Oct 5. The father entered the hospital Tuesday. Both parents are paralyzed below the waist and the father also in the right arm. The father is employed in the sales department of the York Refrigeration Co., Chicago. 3 More Polio Cases in County: A new record high in polio cases was made in DuPage county for 1952 with the reporting of three cases this week. The previous peak year was 1949 with 113 cases. A total of 115 cases has been reported so far this year. The two new cases are a 15-year old boy of Tri-State Village and a 29-year old woman of Villa Park. Both are at Hinsdale hospital. The third case is that of David Atkins, of 1127 Fisher street, Wheaton. His illness, reported in the Journal last week, was verified by the county health department today. Atkins is the husband of Mrs. Edith Atkins, who gave birth to a boy while a polio victim. Dr. E.I. Sederlin, director of the county health department, expects sporadic cases of polio until November. David Atkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Atkins, 3745 Narmore Dr. N.E., will be transferred in the next few days from Emory Hospital to the Warm Springs foundation. Mrs. Atkins, who was less seriously stricken with polio a few days before their 6-week old son Charles was born, already has been permitted to leave the hospital, but is still in a wheelchair and will continue out-patient physical therapy treatment. The father was stricken the day after Charles was born. His wife, Charles and their 18-month old daughter, Shirley Louise, are staying with his parents. Mr. Atkins, a Tech graduate, was training with an Illinois firm at the time of the attacks. Officials of the Fulton-DeKalb Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis said the local chapter assumed responsibility for the couple's care with their change of residence. A native of Illinois, he had resided here for 20 years. Mr. Atkins, a consulting engineer, graduated from the University of Illinois and received his Masters Degree from Georga Tech. He was a member of ASHRAE and C.E.C. and served on the State Board of Engineering Examiners. He was a member of the Lakewood Presbyterian Church, Duval Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Bodies, Morocco Temple and San Jose Country Club. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Edith Atkins; 3 daughters, Mrs. Shirley Hartman of Siesta Key; Miss Bethany Atkins and Miss Debra Atkins, both of Jacksonville; 2 sons, Charles Atkins and John Atkins, both of Jacksonville; a brother, Dr. J.
