Margaret H. “Peg” Northrup, 89, of French Asylum, PA passed away Friday, August 3, 2012 at the Bradford County Manor in West Burlington Twp., PA. “Peg” as she was known by her family and friends was born April 26, 1923 in New Albany, PA the daughter of Mason and Gladys Rogers Hibbard. She was a graduate of the Evergreen School in Albany Twp. and in early years was employed by the Blue Swan in Sayre, PA. On July 9, 1941 she married Hugh B. Northrup in Apalachin, NY. Tthe couple made their home in French Asylum where they cared for and provided a home for foster children for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years on October 21, 1991. Peg was a member of the French Asylum United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, was a member of the choir and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Wysox Rebekah Lodge No. 443 and the French Asylum Grange. Peg enjoyed volunteering at the Wysox Fire Hall and for Claverack events.
Surviving are her:
daughter, Ella Mae Hinckley of Towanda son, James Northrup of Towanda a family of foster children, Pauline Hutchinson of Towanda, Elizabeth and Donald Vanderpool of Towanda, Fred and Carol Ackley of Towanda, Francis E. Vanderpool of Dallas, PA, Paul and Kathy Rick of Parksburg, PA and a number of additional foster children and their families. Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Sisters, Ann Roy of Gillett, Bonnie Brown of Athens, Beryl Simmons of Freemansburg, PA and a brother, Ben Hibbard of Milan.
Several nieces, nephews and cousins. Her caregivers, granddaughter, Tammy Johnson and husband David Johnson of French Asylum and very special friend, Elaine Gowin of Spring Lake.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, August 9, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home 217 York Ave. Towanda, PA. Interment will follow in Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills, PA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
