Vertice Terry Smith was born in Draper, Utah, on 9 Feb. 1922, the youngest child of Joseph E. and Clarissa Almeda Smith. She died on 4 Sept 2012 of natural causes at the age of 90.
Vertice had eleven siblings, some of whom helped raise her after their parents died. She graduated from Jordan High School. She married Shirl R. Allen in 1940. They had two daughters; they were later divorced. She married Gideon "Andy" Achter in 1946. Andy's daughter from a previous marriage, Catherine, joined the family. They also had four boys.
Vertice Candled eggs to support her family. After technology replaced egg candlers, she worked for many years in the housekeeping department of Z.C.M.I.
She was preceded in death by her parents, all eleven siblings; husband Andy, Catherine, and son Bruce. She is survived by daughters Sherlene (Bob) and Renee, sons Bryant (Pam), Ronald (Brenda), Richard (Debbie), and Bruce's widow Claudine, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, 10 Sept. 2012 at Mountain View Memorial Mortuary, 3115 East 7800 South. There will be a short viewing just prior to the funeral at 10:00.
