Henry Smith ARCHER
Henry Smith Archer was born near Raytown, Green County, Tennessee, September 11, 1847 and departed from this life April 21, 1930 with an age of 83 years, 7 months, 10 days, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lillian Martin, 5203 Maywood Avenue, Maywood, CA.
He was of German, Irish descent, and growing up in the mountainous regions of Eastern Tennessee gave him the foundation for a strong healthy body, sturdy habits, and a cheerful disposition. He was disposed to look on the bright side of life although he suffered many hardships during the early part of his life caused by the ravages of both the Union and Confederate armies which passed back and forth during the Civil War. He moved to Liberty, Clay County, MO with his father and some of his elder brothers in 1868, living there about 14 years. During his sojourn in Missouri he married Miss Susan A. Crockett, to this union two children were born, Mollie F. and Eugene M. Then death entered the home taking the wife and mother in March 1879. On September 18, 1881, he was married to Miss Louisa Mattox, to this union eight children were born. He then moved to Kansas in the fall of 1882 settling on a farm near Canton, McPherson County, Kansas, residing there about one year then moved near McPherson, where he resided until 1913 this time moving to Newton, Harvey County, Kansas. After nine years he again changed his place of abode, this time to California, sojourning for a short time in San Bernardino and finally in Los Angeles, where he passed away.
Always jolly and friendly, he made friends wherever he went, and created an atmosphere of sunshine. He was always greeted by his friends as "Dad". He was unselfish, willing to share his last morsel of bread with those in need. Ever loyal to his family and to his country. Honest, upright, always opposing wrong, ever upholding the right. Therefore with these splendid qualities in his passing we lose a loving husband, a kind and ever consideration father in the home, and a highly esteemed citizen in the community. Those left to mourn his sudden departure are his wife, Louisa Archer, and six children: Mrs. Mollie F. Shaw of Hallis Summit, KS; Eugene M. Archer of Newton, KS; Mrs. Jessie E. Irvin of Hynes, CA; Philo S. Archer of Hutchinson, KS; Mrs. Velma Greve of Maywood CA; and seven grandchildren; also two brothers, John Archer of Liberty, MO; Alexander Archer, Excelsior Springs, MO; and two sisters, Mrs. Martha Wallace of Liberty, MO and Elizabeth Davis of Excelsior Springs, MO. Four children have preceded him in death, Fannie W., William, Harold H., and an infant son; also five brothers and one sister. Undertaker L. R. Rice Funeral Parlor, Los Angeles. Burial was in Angeles Abbey Mausoleum.
