Josephine, one of eleven children, had a twin brother, Joseph Lesniewski. She first married Charles E. "Bob" Shiel and had one child, Lois. After the death of Charles at 33 years of age she married Leonard Zakrzewski.

At the time her death, Josephine resided on Brigham Street, in the north end of Toledo, where she died. Surviving are daughter, Lois Reed, and sisters, Mrs. Thelma Wozniak, and Mrs. Martha Gramza, and grandchildren, Camille, Jeffrey, and Russell, and great granddaughter, Jennifer, who called her "Grandma Jo." Her body was donated to the Medical College of Ohio.
