Captain John Plankinhorn Donaldson, Jr., Company H, 22nd Regiment, Virginia Infantry, Confederate States Army.

Captain Donaldson was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, the son of John P. and Maltilda Nice Donaldson. He was a descendant of the family for which the Nicetown section of Philadelphia was named. Donaldson's grandfather, William Donaldson, was Sheriff of Philadelphia, 1808-1810.

John P. Donaldson, Jr. enlisted in the 1st Kanawha Regiment, at Charlestown, Virginia (now West Virginia)in May 1861. He served as 2nd Sergeant until elected and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant of Company H, 22nd Regiment, Virginia Infantry July 27, 1861. He was elected and appointed 1st Lieutenant on May 1, 1862 and later promoted to Captain.

In November 1863, Captain Donaldson was wounded at Droop Mountain, VA. On June 3, 1864, Captain Donaldson was wounded and captured at Gaines Farm, during the Battle of Cold Harbor, VA. Captain Donaldson was held as a POW at Fort Delaware until June 10, 1865 when he was released.

Captain Donaldson's younger brother, Francis Adams Donaldson was Captain of Company H, 118th Pennsylvania Volunteers, the "Corn Exchange Regiment," Union Army.
