British Mariner. He was the Captain of the "RMS Carpathia," the vessel that saved 706 people who were victims of the sinking of the "RMS Titanic." For his rescue work he was awarded a silver cup and gold medal by survivors, and a few months after the disaster he was presented by President William Howard Taft with the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award the United States could confer upon a civilian. On the same day Lord James Bryce, then British Ambassador at Washington, DC, presented him with the American Cross of Honour, awarded by the American Cross of Honour Society. The Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society's medal was presented to him at Liverpool, England by Lord Derby, and a gold medal was received from the Shipwreck Society of New York.
