Covington Hardee, a Florence native who had a remarkable career in law and banking died of heart failure on November 1, according to his wife, Diana. He was 85 and lived in Washington, Connecticut. William Covington Hardee was born on March 2, 1919 in Florence, the son of A.L. and Nell Covington Hardee, and graduated from McClenaghan High School in Florence and Emory University in Atlanta. He received a law degree from Harvard in 1943 and was a communication officer during World War II. He taught at Harvard Law School before entering private law practice. He became general counsel for the Union Pacific Railroad and advised clients throughout the United States and in London, Brazil, Paraguay and Puerto Rico during a distinguished legal career. In 1975, after being a trustee for several years. Mr. Hardee became chairman and chief executive officer of Lincoln Savings Bank, a Brooklyn institution that expanded to serve all of New York City during his tenure. He was once pictured on the cover of New York Magazine which featured an article about his leadership of the bank and his many civic contributions. He was a director of the Diners™ Club, chairman of the Brooklyn Museum™s governing committee and a trustee of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. After retiring from Lincoln Savings Bank in 1984, he directed the fund raising efforts of the New Milford Hospital Foundation
