"Mars" Bob was s/o Robert Letcher Bowles, Sr. and Annie Foreman. He married Katherine "Kate" Stribling in December of 1888 at Virginia City, Cass Co., ILLinois. They did not have any children. He was a Confederate veteran having served with Co. "C", 9th Kentucky Cavalry, C.S.A. under the command of Lt. Col. W. C. P. Breckinridge from 20 September 1862 thru till May of 1865. At one time during the earlier part of the war the 9th was attached to John Hunt Morgan's command. He was in the final escort that accompanied President Jefferson Davis in his attempt to allude the Federal army in Northern Georgia. He came to Palmyra after the war in about 1873 from Jacktown, Bourbon Co., Kentucky. He became one of the directors of the Palmyra National Bank in 1885 and was elected President in 1892. He was a large land owner in Marion Co. and at one time owned 5,000 acres. He had a sister named Emmarine who was married to Wesley Lander Taylor. She died in 1864 leaving numerous children. He had a brother, John M. Bowles, who served with him in Co. "C" of the 9th Kentucky until his capture in Georgia after which he spent time at Camp Morton in Indianapolis.
