was born 27 Dec 1805 in Sevier County,Tennessee, and died 22 Oct 1847 in Vera Cruz,Mexico. He married ANGELINA FRANCES PORTER 17 Mar 1833, daughter of GEORGE W PORTER. She was born 08 Aug 1815, and died 29 Oct 1852 in Sevier County,Tennessee.

Entered Navy as Midshipman May 1, 1826 & served aboard Schooner "Shark" and Frigate "Guerriere". Died of yellow fever aboard U.S. staemer "Petula" while at anchor in the harbor of Vera Cruz,Mexico during the Mexican War. Held rank of Lt at time of death.

Diary of Drury Payne Armstrong: Jan 28,1845
Met with Board of Directory of Union Bank. Sworn in for the 1845, under continuation of the appointment from the parent Bank at Nashville. Visited Lieutenant S.C. Gist of the U.S. Navy - was treated by him very politely. Saw many things, gleanings in antiquities, curiosities and paintings etc. collected by him in his crusings in the Mediterranean sea and Pacifick Ocean etc. Drank a few drops of the water from the pool of Silom at Jerusalem brought back by him.
