On 6 September 2004, our beloved son Lcpl. Michael J. Allred returned to his Heavenly Father while serving his country in Iraq. Upon his death, he was posthumously awarded the Gold Star in lieu of a second Purple Heart. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Michael was born 12 November 1981 in Vernal, Utah. In 1990, he and his family moved to Cache Valley, settling in Hyde Park. He loved Cache Valley and dreamed of returning home to this beautiful, peaceful valley. Instead, he made an early return to his heavenly home, being joyously received by his loving grandfather, Leo Jorgensen; and his Savior, Jesus Christ. After graduating from Sky View High School and LDS Seminary in June 2000, Michael joined the U.S. Marine Corps in January 2001. He graduated from the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California, in April 2001. He was then stationed in Camp Pendleton, becoming part of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. Michael trained and worked hard and within record time was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. Michael served two tours of duty in Iraq, first from February–May 2003 and then returning in March 2004. He was scheduled to return stateside in October. In May 2004, Michael was awarded a Purple Heart for an injury sustained during a fierce firefight 26 March. In a letter sent to his parents, Michael's commanding officer wrote: "Despite being wounded, performance that night was gallant and his leadership was critical in repelling the enemy's assault... Lcpl Allred continues to be a key leader in this platoon. I can always count on him to get the job done right. He is respected and well-liked by his peers, subordinates and seniors, alike. I am very glad and grateful to have him on the team!" A tall, lanky, handsome Marine, Michael had a quick wit, a ready laugh, and a tender heart. He was easy to like and always ready for an adventure. He is loved and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Michael is survived by his parents, Brett and Zellene of Hyde Park; older brother and sister (twins) Brad (Kim) of Logan, and Brooke (Jeff) of Columbus, Ohio, younger brothers, Daniel of Salt Lake, and Adam of Hyde Park; maternal grandmother, Veda Jorgensen of Vernal; paternal grandparents, Aral and Elaine Allred of Hyde Park; two nieces; one nephew; aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Leo H. Jorgensen. Funeral services: 11 a.m., Hyde Park LDS Stake Center. Burial will follow at Hyde Park Cemetery.
