Army Captain David C. Haas, 29, of Brunswick Maine, died while serving in South Korea. Capt. Haas had served two tours in Iraq. In South Korea, he served with the 403rd Field Support Brigade. He was due to return home in November 2012.
Capt. Haas was a graduate of Brunswick High School and was President of his senior class. He won an Army ROTC scholarship which allowed him to attend the University of Richmond in Virginia. David was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas. He deployed with the Division to Iraq where he served as a Truck Platoon Leader. During his second deployment to Iraq David served as a Maintenance Company Commander once again with the 1st Infantry Division. He returned to Fort Riley in 2009.
He loved public service and was planning to become a high school counselor or teacher when his military career was completed.
David was known for his infectious laugh, beaming smile, and his ability to bring out the best in family and friends. Capt. Haas was a good Officer and Commander who put the completion of the Mission and the welfare of his troops at the top of his list of priorities.
He is survived by his parents, Joe and Annette Haas; siblings, Marc and Kirsten; grandmother, Ruth C. Haas; one nephew; two nieces and numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 132 Mckeen St.,Brunswick, with interment with full military honors following at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
