Giles was the youngest son of John and Elizabeth (Humphrey) Aylesworth, and born in Milton, Otsego County, New York. His father died when Giles was about three. He moved with his mother in 1815 to Wayne County, Ohio where his other siblings had settled.

In 1829, Giles purchased land in Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio where he farmed. He married Mary Jones, in Wayne County, Ohio on March 24, 1831. The couple removed with their five children to Porter County, Indiana in 1842.

He is said to have arrived in Boone Township, Porter County with $2,000 with which he purchased his farm. He taught school during the winters of 1842 and 1843. Giles purchased additional land in 1848. He spent the remainder of his life in Boone Township.

Children from the union of Giles and Mary include: Arvilda (d. 1848), Porter, Agnes (d. 1848), James (d. 1848), Thomas, Adeline, Irvin, and Loretta? (died young).
