Mary Lucinda Frieze was born September 25, 1843, in Peters Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, the second of six daughters born to Jacob and Susanna Wertz Frieze. On October 14, 1869, she married William Harrison Brown, in Franklin County. They were the parents of 6 children, the of whom died young (Harvey A., Effie S. and Annie B. Brown). The surviving children were Bertha Frieze, Caroline Frances and Luella D. Brown.
