Russian Royalty. The penultimate son of Tsar Alexander II, during the reign of his brother Alexander III, he was General of the Russian army and commander of the Preobrazhensky Regiment. In 1884, he married Princess Elizabeth of Hesse-Darmstadt, elder sister of future Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, and known at the end of the twentieth century as St. Elizabeth of the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1891, the Grand Duke Sergej was appointed Governor General of Moscow, and had a very active and authoritarian role during the struggle against the dissidents' revolution. In 1894, Emperor Nicholas II appointed him Member of the Council of State and Commander of the Moscow Military District. He was assassinated by a bomb near the Kremlin walls.

Gravesite Details

Initally buried in the Chudov Monastery in Moscow, however his remains were moved to the Novospassky Monastery also in Moscow since 1995.
