He graduated from Lovell High School in 1939 and served in the Army from 1941 to 1945. During his initial army training, he met and married Salem, Oregon resident, Ethel Williams in Aberdeen, Washington. March 6th, 1943.
After the war, they returned to make their home in Lovell, where they were blessed with 6 children: daughter Linda Schroer (John) of Casper, WY ; twin sons Robert Wilkerson (Renee) of rural Powell, WY and Richard Wilkerson (Peggy) of Pinehaven, WY; twin sons Terry Wilkerson (Jane) of Lovell, WY. and Larry Wilkerson (Linda) of Gillette, WY: daughter Diane Maki (Bill) of Casper, WY. Gene and Ethel were later blessed with 18 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Gene was employed by Cenex Oil Company for 30 years. The family lived in Lovell until he was transferred to Gillette in 1961. He worked and raised his family there and then retired in Lovell in 1985.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman who shared his love of Wyoming and the outdoors with his immediate and extended family. He shot his most recent Elk in 2011 and sadly the elk permit he drew this year will go unused.
The viewing will be held at Haskell's Funeral Home on Thursday, June 28th from 6-8 pm. Services will follow on Friday, June 29th at 10 am at the LDS church in Lovell. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Horizons Care Center, North Bighorn Hospital Comfort Care or Lovell Veterans Organization. Memorials may be sent in care of Haskell's Funeral Home, 605 E. Main St., Lovell, WY 82431.
