Larry Cox was a member of The Dearly Beloved - Tucson's most promising 1960s garage band. Other band members were Tom Walker, Terry Lee, Shep Cooke, and Pete Schuyler.

Four of the five band members survived the wreck, which took place just after 8 a.m. on July 3, 1967 along a desolate stretch of highway 52 miles east of Yuma.

The band had started as the Intruders in 1964 by guitarists Tom Walker and Terry Lee, who had grown up together not far from the Arizona Inn. They recruited a buddy, Pete Schuyler, to play drums and Schuyler brought along another neighborhood kid, Larry Cox, to be the singer. Cox was the only one yet to graduate from Catalina High School.

Five months after the accident, Larry Cox's fiancée Peggy Selby gave birth to their son.

Larry Cox Jr. was a Christmas Day baby in 1967, the legacy of a man who was Selby's whole life.

She was 14 when she met Cox at a Tucson bowling alley where The Dearly Beloved was performing. It was the summer before her freshman year, and he was a 17-year-old senior at Catalina High School. Within a couple months the two were dating.

She was 17 and a senior at Palo Verde High School when she got pregnant.

(2012) Now 62, Selby has never gotten over losing Cox. It is a hurt that hasn't healed much in 45 years.

During renovation of his parents house, the contractor called Peggy. He had found writing on the wall of Cox's bedroom closet: "Larry Cox loves Peggy Selby."

She says the worker cut out the piece of drywall and gave it to her -providing some of the comfort that had eluded her so long.
