Helen was the seventh of eight children born to Harry Jones Keibler and Nellie Margaret Shannon. In 1917, Nellie, who was pregnant with their ninth child, fell while going out of the house into the back yard and died a day later along with her unborn child. The following year, Helen's father Harry died during the Spanish Flu epidemic.

Helen continued to live in Wilkinsburg with her siblings, while being raised and cared for by her elderly grandmother, Mary Ann Keibler. In 1919 Helen was adopted by Charles Everett Brashear and his wife Clara Amelia Cleaver, a childless couple who lived in the small town of Centerville in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
