On July 16, 1938 he was united in marriage to Erma Rae Crowe in Schuyler, Nebraska. Elon served in the U.S. Army during World War II from August 1945 to September 1946. The couple lived in Columbus where he worked for Beatrice Foods, Henke Manufacturing, and also owned and operated Elon's Drive Inn. Elon enjoyed collecting small gas engines and was a member of the Antique Tractor and Small Gas Engine Club.
