Marjorie was into genealogy.

In 1971, she assembled a soft-cover 8 1/2" x 11" booklet which was given to family members at Christmas.

In the late 1970's or early 80's, in response to one of my genealogical inquiries, I was sent a copy of the book. It is 1 1/4 inches thick and is slightly over 300 pages. The preface reads as Follows:

Many members of our Walthall family have shown interest in and at times engaged actively in searching for correct information about previous generations of the family. For the present however the two who deserve the most gratitude from the rest of us are my mother, Mrs. Wilson Jones (Nina Trimble) and Mr. Malcolm Elmore Walthall, both deceased.

For as long as I can remember mother carried on correspondence with innumerable people on the subject of some Walthall or other and, in the late 1940's and throughout the 1950's, she, my dad, and my Aunt Marjorie, Mrs. Thomas Jones Walthall, made an unaccountable number of trips whose sole purpose was to search, find, and copy any records of Walthalls at any possible or imaginable place.

In the meantime, for years Mr. Malcolm E. Walthall of Virginia had been working on the same project. During the 1940's the two searcher's learned of each others efforts and began an extensive exchange of facts. Then, in 1948, Malcolm's health failed, and he asked mother to do the work of getting the myriad materials prepared for publication.

Just which materials were found by Malcolm, or which materials were found by my mother, dad, and Aunt Marjorie, probably will never be known. Equally obscure is how much of the manuscript preparation was done by each of the two who worked on it for so many years.

The present publication is for the members of the San Antonio branch of the family. It is, to be exact, mother's corrections and additions to the seventh revision of the joint efforts of mother and Malcolm, with additional work by Malcolm's son, Chester Delaney Walthall.

It is acknowledged that the task is still in need of further research - particularly in the state of Virginia. Also, there is no doubt whatever that further study of mother's files will result in additional changes.
