Veteran of the Civil War where he was a Captain in the Iron Brigade, Company D., 2nd Wisconsin Infantry, and was twice brevetted by Act of Congress for gallant and meritorious service. He was seriously wounded at the battle of Antietam in 1862 and could not return to active duty. He later became a lawyer.
