Renowned author/publisher; established the Roycroft Press. A believer in rugged individualism, he is best remembered for his inspirational essay, "A Message to Garcia" (1899). He and his wife, Alice, were among 128 Americans who lost their lives in the sinking of the RMS Lusitania, off the coast of Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland. He is honored via the Roycroft Museum (716- 652-4735) and a cenotaph in East Aurora, New York. There is also a memorial to Lusitania victims erected at Kinsale.
