US Congressman, US Senator. An attorney, he was elected as a Democrat to represent Indiana's 8th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1843 to 1849. In 1852 he was elected as a Democratic Senator from Indiana to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator James Whitcomb. He served from 1853 to 1854, and was unsuccessful in his attempt to be reelected for the seat. He served as an Associate Justice of the Indian State Supreme Court from 1870 to his death in 1877.
