Gene C. Barrier, age 76, passed away peacefully at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir Saturday, June 9. A native of Lenoir, Gene was born February 22, 1936. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Margaret and Wade Barrier.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Jean Barnwell Barrier, his twin brother Jack P. Barrier of Kernersville, NC. and sister Margaret "Susie" Barrier of the Masonic & Eastern Star Home in Greensboro, NC.
Gene was a 1954 graduate of Lenoir High School. He attended Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory and began his business career with the Bank of Lenoir in 1956. He joined Norment & Lambert Company in 1958 and culminated his career in 1998 as president of the company. Gene was heavily involved in the business, civic, and religious life of Lenoir. He was an active member of North Catawba Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Men's Sunday school teacher. An avid golfer and accomplished musician, Gene was a long time member of the Board of Directors of Cedar Rock Country Club. He was a director of the Lenoir Rotary Club and also served 16 years (four non-consecutive four year terms) on the Caldwell Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. From 1992-1997 he served on the Caldwell Memorial Foundation Board.
Funeral services are scheduled on Tuesday afternoon, June 12th at North Catawba Baptist Church at 3:00pm with Reverend Ned Webb officiating. A private burial will be held in the church cemetery prior to the funeral service. The family will receive friends from 1:30 - 3:00p.m. Pendry's Funeral Home is assisting the family.
