John was born in Watten, Caithness, Scotland (the son of Donald and Janet nee Clyne MacDonald)in the Highland's of Scotland. He came to America in early 1882, he left behind one illigitimate son John MacDonald born in December 1881 also in Watten. John II's mother was Alexanderine MacKay for some reason she and John Sr. never married. John was also the adopted father of Chauncey (Burt) Greenberry McDonald, born July 9th, 1880, Chauncy was the son of Margaret H. Vanderpool McLallan and they were married in Missoula, Montana in 2 July of 1893. He also worked on the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad for 43 years and he retired in 1933 as a conductor. He spent most of his adult life in Colorado, first Pueblo, then Denver, and retired in Long Beach, California where he died in April 1936.
