Carlton Gallaher Dinsmoor (Dinny)
July 27, 1906 - February 13, 2004

Carlton Gallaher Dinsmoor, (Dinny) passed away Friday, February 13, 2004 at a local hospital. He was born on July 27, 1906 in St. Mary's, West Virginia. He was the oldest of five children born to James Denton and Nellie Gallaher Dinsmoor of St. Mary's and later of San Antonio, Texas.
Carlton attended Culver Military Academy and later graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Geology. It was here that he met and later married Mary Armstrong Reesler on January 1, 1930. They had two children, Jo Ann and James Frederick.
He moved to Texas in 1930 and was active in the oil business for several years. With his father and brother they formed Dinsmoor Oil and Gas.
In 1942 he was called into service. His last position was Commissioner of Mines and Industry in Korea. He was discharged with the rank of Colonel, and he continued as a reserve officer for many years.
Dinny moved his family from San Antonio to Del Rio, Texas in 1946 where he and his brother, Gordon H. Dinsmoor, had purchased Butane Gas and Appliance Co. The name was later changed to Dinsmoor Bros. Inc. He was active in this business until he retired in 1960.
Dinny and his family were residents of Del Rio for more than 58 years. His wife of 56 years, Mary Dinsmoor, on December 26, 1984; daughter Jo Ann Rose and two brothers and one sister preceded Carlton in death.
On November 8, 1986 Dinny married Mareta Furtney Kahlenberg of Two Rivers, Wisconsin and she passed away July 9, 2001.
For many years he was very active in the development of many popular fruit and pecan varieties with the Texas Agriculture Extension Service. He took his greatest pleasure in providing his family and friends with the results of his work. He was also an avid quail hunter and for years raised and distributed quail in an effort to increase the numbers and quality in South Texas.
Dinny is survived by his son, James, F. Dinsmoor and his wife Dorothy of Edmond, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Connie Rose Hunter of Miami, Florida; Carolyn Rose-Midget of Salt Lake City, Utah; Sheila Rose Gillespie of Pompano Beach, Florida; John Carlton Dinsmoor of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Mary Dee Dinsmoor Gidney of Edmond, Oklahoma. Great-Grandchildren, Jason and Calvin Gidney, Ian, Tim and Jamie Hunter, Hannah Rose Midget, Lauren and Carlton Gillespie. Sister, Mary Dinsmoor Sigafoos of Falls Church, Virginia. Five nieces and nephews also survive.
Grave side services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Del Rio Memorial Park Cemetery.
